Goal Setting in Tennis
Setting clear goals is crucial for tennis players aiming for success and enjoyment of the game. There are two types of goals: Outcome goals and Process goals. Examples of outcome goals are:
- To be the No. 1 tennis player in my country
- To win the next age-group tournament
- To win the next match
Examples of process goals include:
- To get 9 hours of sleep the night before each practice and match
- To eat balanced, nutritious meals every day
- To reset and focus on the next point after hitting a bad shot
There is a tendency for players (and their parents) to focus too much on outcome goals and not enough on process goals. A good balance is necessary for healthy development as a tennis player.
At Serve + 1, we work with our players to set suitable short, medium and long term goals, and develop the action plan necessary to achieve those goals. We then keep track of these goals and ensure that the player is on track every step of the way.
